Spanish companies operate 262 transport infrastructures around the world, which represents 36 percent of the total number open to concessionaires, according to the latest ranking by the Public Works Financing newsletter.

The first three places worldwide are occupied by Spain's ACS, Global Via and Abertis, based on the number of concessions for highways, railroads, airports and ports they had under construction or in operation as of October 2012.

Also among the first 10 groups are the Spanish companies Ferrovial, OHL and Sacyr.
With 30 years' experience in developing concessions in Spain, Spanish construction companies have not only expanded to other nations but have become world leaders in operating transport infrastructures.

They are tops in such countries as Chile, Brazil, Mexico, United States, Canada, Portugal, Britain, Italy, Greece, Poland, India and Australia.

ACS, through its Iridium unit, has 2,397 kilometers (1,489 miles) of expressways under construction or in operation, 248 kilometers (154 miles) of railroads and almost 129,000 sq. meters (155,000 sq. yards) of railroad interchanges.

It also operates the airports of Athens, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Sydney, Budapest and Tirana, as well as some expressways in Germany, Austria, Greece and Chile.

Ferrovial, through its Cintra affiliate, has a portfolio of 20 expressways in Spain, Canada, United States, Portugal, Ireland and Greece, for a total of 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles), and thanks to BAA, it operates five airports in Britain: Heathrow, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
